The Poverty Initiative at Union Theological Seminary, in partnership with The Seminary of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, is offering an educational exchange and vocational enrichment program from January 16-31, 2009. The intention is to develop a relationship between the two institutions as a response to the unique requirements of vocational formation in the contexts of poverty and a faith-inspired social movement to end poverty. Such a relationship would benefit the constituents (religious, academic and community) of each institution and invite strategic dialogue and collaborative action with aligned organizations.
L’initiative de pauvreté au Union Theological Seminary, dans l’association avec le Séminaire de Théologie de l’Eglise Episcopale diocèse d’Haïti, offrira un programme d’échange éducatif et d’enrichissement professionnel à partir des 16-31 janvier 2009. L’intention est de développer un rapport entre les deux établissements comme réponse aux conditions uniques de la formation ministérielle dans les contexte de la pauvreté et d’un mouvement social inspiré par foi pour supprimer la pauvreté. Un tel rapport bénéficierait les constituants (religieux, universitaire et communauté) de chaque établissement et inviterait le dialogue stratégique et l’action de collaboration avec des organismes alignés.

Pastoral Theology
Parish Ministry: Theology and Practice

This course will use a case study approach to examine and discuss theological issues of pastoral care, pastoral roles, congregational and parish dynamics, social and community empowerment, and clergy self-care. Anonymous case studies from the United States and Haiti, including scenarios suggested by students, will provide opportunity to flesh out understandings of and ways of living into ‘pastoral care’. To underscore the integrative character of the course, spiritual formation exercises will be woven into each class. Additionally, the second week will conclude with a condensed clergy retreat.
Ministière de la Paroisse: Théologie et Pratique
Ce cours utilisera l’étude de cas afin d’examiner et analyser des questions théologiques des fonctions pastorales, les dynamiques de congrégation et de paroisse, l’émancipation sociale et communautaire, et le soin de soi du clergé. Des cas d’études anonymes des Etats-Unis et de Haïti, incluant des scénarii suggérés par les étudiants, fourniront des opportunités pour exposer des connaissances du « soin pastoral » et des façons de vivre en son sein. Afin de souligner l’aspect de terrain du cours, des exercices de formation spirituelle se glisseront dans chaque classe. De surcroît, la deuxième semaine se conclura par une retraite concentrée.
Interpreting The Gospel of Mark

The Gospel of Mark is a superb composition that takes seriously many aspects of life in the 21st century. Its portrait of Jesus is imaginative and gripping. Its tumultuous “good news” is full of violence, doubt, conflict and healing power, inviting us into the hermeneutic process of discovering and narrating the gospel today.
This course stays close to the actual text of Mark as a way of thinking creatively about how to interpret it for our day. Each morning, the class will look in-depth at one Markan passage and work directly with the text and each other to explore how it might be interpreted in and for Haitian contexts and communities.
